   "EU with YOU" in Ohrid

 

On 27 January 2021, David Geer, Ambassador of the European Union will visit Ohrid to discuss ongoing efforts for preserving the UNESCO “Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region” inscribed in 1979-1980. He will meet Konstantin Georgieski, Mayor of Ohrid, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Culture and civil associations to discuss the endangered UNESCO status and the concrete steps to be taken towards preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region.

Ambassador Geer, together with Goran Milevski, Minister of Local Self-Government and Sasho Tochkov, President of Ohrid Red Cross will also present the winter rescue equipment that was supplied under the EU-funded programme for cross-border cooperation between North Macedonia and Albania.

 

‘EU with YOU’ visit will take place in Ohrid to underline the importance of protecting the Outstanding Universal Value that the region was attributed by UNESCO for its natural values and for the diversity of its cultural, material and spiritual heritage. ‘EU with YOU’ encompasses a site visit of Ohrid and its Old Town and a meeting with Ohrid Mayor to discuss the challenges of the municipalities concerned (Ohrid, Struga and Debrca) as well as the need of increased community participation, full commitment by the country and coordinated approach at both central and local level. In follow-up to their meeting, ambassador Geer and Mayor Georgieski will give media statements.

Later on, Ambassador Geer, Goran Milevski, Minister of Local Self-Government and Sasho Tochkov, President of Ohrid Red Cross will present the winter equipment of the Ohrid Mountain Rescue Service. This enhanced rescue network will further contribute to the promotion of the less known regions of Debrca (MK) and Gramsh (AL) as safe travel destinations and improve their competitiveness on the regional tourist market. The three mayors (of Ohrid, Debrca and Gramsh) will also have their statements.

In the afternoon, the ambassador will meet representatives of associations that are active in environment protection, conservation and management of the UNESCO Ohrid-Prespa region.
